What is DIM? And Why would you Need it?
Diindolylmethane (DIM) is a stable indole found in cruciferous vegetables which promote a beneficial estrogen metabolism in both women and men. Post-menopausal women that take hormone replacement therapy can improve their estrogen metabolism with DIM. Among the other benefits, DIM gives women is a lower chance of weight gain and maintain uterine, cervical breast health while decreasing the chances of cancer.
Can Men Benefit from DIM?
Everyone knows estrogen is an important hormone for reproduction in women. What is not often appreciated is that estrogen levels, though lower than those in women, are also essential in men. However, midlife changes in men result in excess estrogen production beyond its minimal essential level. Like perimenopausal women, men experience a tendency to gain weight in midlife. Fat cells contain the enzyme known as Aromatase, which converts Testosterone into Estrogen. This process is the primary source of estrogen in men. Testosterone converts to estrogen naturally then breaks down into “bad” and “good” estrogen metabolites. DIM will improve this ratio by helping the body eliminate the bad estrogens.
Supplemental Diindolylmethane DIM reduces the effects of unmetabolized estrogen and promotes the action of testosterone. It does this by maximizing the testosterone-to-estrogen ratio in the body, thus increasing the activity of testosterone. . . . Diindolylmethane DIM can improve mood, fight depression, and support memory. . . . Diindolylmethane DIM also can be used to help address many of the unwanted side effects of estrogen in men—particularly those that occur with the age-related accumulation of estrogen. . . . Diindolylmethane DIM can now be used to reduce the risk of prostate enlargement and promote a healthy prostate. Optimum testosterone-to-estrogen hormone balance achieved with the use of Diindolylmethane DIM can help to preserve a youthful urinary tract and prevent age-related prostate growth. DIM blocks the estrogen receptors, interfering with their activity. This raises the ratio of testosterone to estrogen. With DIM causing an increase in free testosterone, this means a higher sex drive, better moods, muscle building and bone-strengthening from workouts. DIM may reduce the chance of an enlarged prostate because of estrogen presence.
